The Folk Nation (commonly referred to as Folk or Folks) is an alliance of street gangs originating in Chicago, established in 1978.[1] The alliance has since spread throughout the United States, particularly the Midwest region of the United States. They are rivals of the People Nation.

Formation[edit]

The Folk Nation was formed on November 11, 1978, within the confines of the Illinois Department of Corrections. Larry Hoover, the chairman of the Gangster Disciple Nation, created the idea for the alliance and persuaded many leaders of large Black, White, and Latino gangs from Chicago to join. Soon after its formation, the People Nation was formed to counter the Folks alliance.

The Folk Nation was formed on November 11, 1978, within the confines of the Illinois Department of Corrections. Larry Hoover, the chairman of the Gangster Disciple Nation, created the idea for the alliance and persuaded many leaders of large Black, White, and Latino gangs from Chicago to join. The Insane Gangster Disciplesare a drug gang that began operating northern areas of Birminghamin the 1990s. The gang is affiliated with the Gangster Disciples and the national 'Folk Nation' originating in Chicago. The Insane Gangster Disciples set has crews in several southern and midwestern states. The Gangster Disciple Nation was born out of two organizations. In the beginning, there were two separate organizations: The Disciple Nation, whose President was David Barksdale, and the Gangster Nation, whose President was Larry Hoover. There were many branches of both organizations. Hoover's Gangster Disciples then formed the nucleus of the Folk Nation, which grew to include several Latin-American street gangs. The Folk Nation broke up into inter-alliance warring in the early 1990s. Symbols[edit]

Folk Nation symbols include the Star of David, a winged heart, horns, a die with 6 dots facing forward, the digit 6, a swastika, the Playboy bunny, a sword, a pointed tail, and a pitchfork or a sai on the G.[clarification needed]

Folk gangs also disrespect People Nation gangs and rival Folk gangs by inverting their rivals' various gang symbols.[2]
